For this paper, I would like you to spend some time reflecting on what you have learned about
cultural differences and international organizational behavior from the class discussions and
from reading the Cultural Foundations and Stranger in a Strange Land articles.


Your paper should be a total of 5 pages long as detailed below:
The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to think critically about the powerful
influence that culture and different cultural values have on your professional and personal
behaviors and experiences and those of others.


Part 1: Case Study
1. Read and Stranger in a Strange Land by Gary Katzenstein and describe your reactions to the
reading in 2.5 pages. Do NOT summarize the article.
In your discussion be sure to address the following questions:
a. What were the challenges that Gary experienced in Japan? Be specific.
b. What were some of the cultural value differences that accounted for some of the
misunderstandings that occurred? Be VERY specific.


In answering this question, explain the value(s) that Gary did not understand
which caused his challenges using the following value dimensions?
1. Geert Hofstede
2. Kluckhohn and Strotbeck
3. Fons Trompenaars and
4. The Direct and Indirect Communication Value Dimensions
