Any kind of Southern Asia and Eastern Asia contain some of the oldest and most culturally rich and diverse civilizations in the world, that were isolated from Western influence for most of history.

Due to this isolation, these areas gave birth to six unique and still active religions that can be found all over the world today: Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism in India; Confucianism and Daoism in China; and Shinto in Japan.

†Asian art uses material aesthetics to bring philosophical and spiritual ideas to life, and as we move into this section it is easy to see why there are two chapters designated to Asian art and architecture.†Symbolism is present in every piece of art found in this part of the world, especially in the religious pieces.Take for example the use of the Lotus Flower in Buddhism.

It is usually shown as a white water lily, and it symbolizes spiritiual purity, cosmic harmony and the wholeness of creation. Buddha is usually depicted as sitting on a Lotus throne, sometimes single, sometimes double, but this is meant to represent nirvana. While reading, examine the works present in your book and look for the symbolism present in each one.
