Insights Learnt

In Lumet’s, article chapter on style, the writer reviews how style has been viewed as a way of life in the movie sector. In his article he shows how critics comment on interaction of all the aspects that are incorporated towards the development of a movie or a story. [blur] In the article, the writer gives special inferences to various views that critics have made. On reading the article, one can tell that the writer is more concerned of the ideas that are incorporated to the plot of the movie and in line with the nature of the primary forms of story. The article further explains that any story achieves more of its function by tapping into the human emotion and incorporating realism and some level of naturalism. [/blur]

Role of Style as Lumet Comments

       [blur] In Lumet’s article, Style gives meaning to the movies or the story that one would like to tell. Through style as Lumet explains, a writer illuminates the societal lens of universality and diversity in the ideas that one would like to expose to make the story appealing to a big audience as opposed to specific kinds of people or a small audience. The writer comments and gives inference to the movie City Lights, by citing how Chaplin adorns different techniques of storytelling. He says, “Chaplin Moves from one form to the other….” The act of moving through each form is what makes the story appealing. [1] [/blur]

How Does Style Serve the Story?

            [blur] Styles serve different roles but as Lumet explains, it plays a special role in the reiteration of themes. It gives the stories their meaning allowing the readers or the viewers to get the intended message with clarity. In explaining this view, the writer notes “….surely the way you tell that story should somehow relate to what the story is….” [2] [/blur]

[blur] In the story, the writer makes a comment, “Discussions of style as something totally detached from the content of the movie drive me mad... Let me vent my anger first, so it's out of the way. Critics talk about style as something apart from the movie because they need the style to be obvious. The reason they need it to be obvious is that they don't really see...” In this statement, the writer hopes to show the importance of view style as a component of the story rather than just a feature. Further explanations clarify the message the writer hopes to put across. He says the most effective aspect of style is one which is not visible. [3]
