Initially, computer applications were designed to run centrally from a mainframe computer and were accessed via less powerful client-end devices. However, since the establishment of digital computers, computer applications have undergone a series of improvements especially in the recent time when the IBM introduced robust client end devices that would support command-line operating systems such as Microsoft Disk Operating System.†

[blur] This allowed computer applications to be run locally on desktop computers. The corresponding improvement on the WWW and broadband connectivity ushered in the Web-based application model. [/blur]

[blur] A web-based application runs on a local device such as a laptop or a desktop computer over the internet but is predominantly hosted on a remote server as opposed to a desktop application that runs locally on a standalone computer device without an internet connection. User needs and environments determine the choice of application, whether a web-based or a desktop application is to be used by different users. [/blur]

[blur] In his comparison of the two classes of applications, Olson (2012) argues that, in a large way, the ubiquity of the WWW and its resourcefulness allows for a more centralized approach. This has made web applications more interactive across different platforms, unlike desktop applications that require being developed and tested for various operating systems. This brings to the fore the advantage of cost-effectiveness in developing web applications over desktop applications. [/blur]

[blur] Regardless of the usersí environment or their situational requirements, it is understood that, unlike desktop applications, web applications are easily customizable to suit the needs of the user. This is an advantage considering that web applications can be modified to fit the feel and the requirements of different users. In essence, this allows individual users to experience personalized solutions to their specific situations, in contrast to desktop applications that require everyone to settle for a similar look irrespective of their tastes and situations (Olson, 2012). [blur] Another advantage of web applications over desktop applications is their availability in a range of devices. Besides being customizable for different users, web-based applicational content can also be updated to allow access on any device that has an internet connection. For instance, YouTube application can be switched from a desktop version to a mobile version that can be accessed on cell phones, tablets, and PDAs. [/blur]

[blur] Web applications are usually accessed via a common interface, that is, the WWW browser. This brings the advantage of universal access into the system, anywhere, anytime and on any device connected to the internet. This gives the user the freedom to choose when and where they can use the application. Also, the universality of web-based applications enables different users to interact and collaborate for a common course and therefore, more exciting than the fixed desktop applications that only allow a single user at a given time. [/blur]

[blur] The ease with which web applications are maintained and new ones installed comes as an added advantage lacking in desktop applications. Individual users are not required to purchase or even take the time to download and install new versions of applications to upgrade their systems. Instead, when an update or a new application is available and installed on the host server, it can be accessed by all users right away without necessarily performing similar upgrades to individual computers. According to Sheehan et al (2015), this opens up the convenience of introducing new applications to potential users with a single installation on the host server. [/blur]

[blur] Lastly, web-based applications offer increased security due to their centralized infrastructure that can be monitored on dedicated servers. In contrast, desktop applications are much harder to secure since they require the application administrators to monitor myriads of client operations to detect security breaches (Sheehan et al, 2015). [/blur]

[blur] In conclusion, web applications have numerous advantages over desktop applications in that they are cost effective in development, maintenance and in keeping them secure, easily customizable, accessible universally, easier to install and upgrade and all that. [/blur]
