Social Problems: Gangs and Crime Culture/ Drug Related

Identify one of the Social Problems discussed in this Kids Gone Wild * or On the Run. Write a research paper that uses a constructionist sociological approach to understand this social problem. Your paper must include an analysis of each stage in this social problems process, as discussed by Best in Social Problems. *If you choose to write about Kids Gone Wild: Because Kids Gone Wild is specifically about concerns about organized teen sexual behavior in the form of rainbow parties, sex bracelets, and sexting, you much choose a different problem to discuss for your paper. For example, Best and Bogle also mention some related concerns, such as commercial products as sources of sexual contamination (i.e. pop icons, music, cell phones, etc. on pages 12-13); the playground as arenas for toubling behavior; concerns over child rearing practices; and other issues or problems that provide the context for understanding why concerns over rainbow parties, sex bracelets, and sexting gained local and international attention. Use the outline on the following page to write this paper. Note my heavy reliance on media sources for support in my claims. This is in line with Best’s argument about how issues become social problems. To illustrate how you will write this paper, I filled in the outline with my research on another book, Gang Leader for a Day, by Sudhir Venkatesh. I would use this outline to write the paper. I suggest that you also provide an outline for your paper to make sure that your paper examaines each stage of the social problems process. SOCIAL PROBLEMS FINAL PAPER OUTLINE 1. Begin with a brief synopsis of the book. (Limited to one paragraph). 2. Identify a social problem that is discussed in the book. (Describe this in one or two clear sentences.) 3. Idenity the claimsmakers. Include THE AUTHOR(s) and FOUR other sources of information A. Two should be “experts.” They can be from academic journals or thinktanks that have based their assertions on research. B. The other two should be from the media. They can be from local or national news stories. 4. Discuss the public reactions. Find at least FOUR blogs, discussion boards, replies to printed news stories, twitter discussions, etc. where this social problem is discussed. A. Read the conversations to understand the extent to which the public understands this issue as a social problem. Briefly discuss each. B. You do not have to focus on what they say about the problem. Rather, focus on whether or not they identify the issue as problematic. 5. Policy making. What institutional or organizational policies have been put into practice in order to solve this problem? A. Find and discuss at least ONE. Such instutions can be schools, laws, etc. 6. Social problems work. Exactly how has this policy been implemented? By whom? 7. Policy outcomes. Has this policy been effective? What is the public reaction? 8. Your view. Conclusion: Discuss your view of this social problem by briefly considering each stage of the process. 9. References: Use ASA or APA format for all websites, articles, discussion boards, etc. SOCIAL PROBLEMS FINAL PAPER EXAMPLE Say that one of the required books is Gang Leader for a Day, by Sudhir Venkatesh. 1. Begin with a brief synopsis of the book. MY PAPER: This book is about the daily operations of an inner city gang in a housing project on the south side of Chicago. Venkatesh discusses his interactions, observations, and relationships with those gang members. This research was conducted in the 1990’s. However, last year there were a number of news stories that suggested that drug-related gang violence was on the increase in Chicago. 2. Identify a social problem that is discussed in the book. MY PAPER: Social problem: Drug-related gang violence is on the increase in Chicago. 3. Identify the claimsmakers. Include THE AUTHOR(s) and FOUR other sources of information. The other two should be from the media. They can be from local or national news stories. MY PAPER: o The Author: ? Venkatesh claims to have witnessed drug deals in his research. ? He also disusses how the gang members talked about drug deals with him, with each other, and with customers. o Experts (must be research-based) 1) the US Department of Justice published an article on the relationship between drugs and gangs 2) An article published in Justice Quartely by Bellair and McNulty (2009) finds that involvemnt in drug selling does not necessarily lead to increased violent behavior. Rather, they find that neighborhood disadvantage leads to increased gang activity and increased violence, especially (but not necessarily) among gang members who deal drugs. o Media ? Story in Bloomberg news: “Heroin Pushed on Chicago Cartel Fueling Gang Murders.” ? Gang Related: A TV show that shows detective on elite gang taskforce who grapples with family members who are gang members and drug kingpins 4. Discuss the public reactions. Find at least FOUR blogs, discussion boards, replies to printed news stories, twitter discussions, etc. where this social problem is discussed. Briefly discuss each. MY PAPER o Blog 1: o Discussion board: o Discussion board 2: o Article about social media and gang wars in Chicago: 5. Policy making. What institutional or organizational policies have been put into practice in order to solve this problem? Find and discuss at least ONE. Such institutions can be schools, laws, etc. MY PAPER o Changes in RICO laws in Illinois: 6. Social problems work. Exactly how has this policy been implemented? By whom? MY PAPER o Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force in Chicago o State troopers and FBI fight gangs in Chicago IMPORTANT NOTE: The social problems work identified here must be performed AFTER the policy was implemented in order to be an effective implementation of the policy. Note the dates here. Keep this in mind for your own paper. 7. Policy outcomes. Has this policy been effective? MY PAPER o Updated list of street gangs and street violence in Chicago o Gang violence up in Chicago o Chicago murders down, but “gang culture” dominates: o Article that states that gang violence influenced by Mexican heroin cartels 8. Your view. Discuss your view of this Identify one of the Social Problems discussed in this Kids Gone Wild * or On the Run. Write a research paper that uses a constructionist sociological approach to understand this social problem. Your paper must include an analysis of each stage in this social problems process, as discussed by Best in Social Problems. by briefly considering each stage of the process. MY PAPER o Most of the media sources (as claimsmakers) agree on the following: Violence is prevalent in Chicago. Gangs are prevelant in Chicago. Drugs are prevalent in Chicago. While the headlines suggested that increased violence was caused by gang disputes over drugs, a close read of the articles did not put the pieces together. Violence is on the increase in Chicago, even among gang members. But this increase in violence is not necessiarily driven by drug disputes. o Most of the claims about drug cartels in Chicago being fueled by Mexican drug cartels mainly concerned herion distribution. No evidence that the drug pipeline has incresed violence among gang members in Chicago—although there is a great deal of evidence that drug gangs are responsible for increased violence in Mexico. o In terms of policy, the increased police attention to drugs has resulted in a great deal of profiling and a large number of stops and searches nationwide. This has mixed public reactions. Some camps think that it is necessary: o Others thing that this is an abuse of police power: o Conclusion: I need to see more experts to weigh in on this issue with statistical evidence before I can declare that drug related gang violence is on the increase in Chicago. This may be a clear social problem in Mexico, but (following Best’s process) it remains to be a social issue in Chicago. Other Assignments we have tacked on the same focus on eradicating poverty, making the community a better place and social works.
